Being focused is one thing and staying focused is another. In this attention economy, it
can be challenging to say the least to stay focused until the achievement of his or her
goals. This is something we all need to work on. Mike Hawkins once said, “You don’t
get results by focusing on results. You get results by focusing on the actions that
Here are a few tips that would help you stay focused.
- Have a vision/ plan/ goal.
Write out your vision or your goal. Once unwritten, it remains abstract. Make it as
conspicuous as possible at the center of your study table and keep reminding
yourself of the goal to be achieved.
- Put “s.m.a.r.t” strategies in place
Dividing your goals into simple strategies makes the goal less overwhelming and
easy to attain. “S.M.A.R.T” is an acronym which means specific, measurable,
achievable, realistic and time bound. Your strategies must be specific because
they should be well defined and unambiguous, measurable because you need to
measure growth and progress, realistic because it has to be within reach and not
“too-far-fetched”. Finally, your strategies should be time bound because its
expedient you give deadlines to your goals to hold you accountable.
- Manage your time
As mentioned in the previous article, some activities we engage in are time
wasters. Managing your time is a crucial step in staying focused. Anything that
would drift your attention to things that are unnecessary and unimportant, choose
to eliminate from your environment. Avoid procrastination and commit yourself to
the time you’ve allocated to carry out a specific target.
- Assess your progress
Tracking your progress should be done on a daily or at most weekly basis. This
makes you know how far you’ve come to achieving your goal. Assessing your
progress will also bring to your attention the things that isn’t working so you make
some adjustments. It keeps you focused.
- Stay healthy in mind and body
One thing we undermine so much is our health. How do we stay focused on
achieving our goals if we are unstable in our minds and body? Eat well. Sleep
well. Practice gratitude. Practice meditation. Whatever works for you, find it and
practice it enthusiastically.
